The Old Nollywood

Who remembers the old nollywood?
When it was more about the story line?
When it was in two parts, instead of prequels and sequels?
When we saw Pete Edochie only in one scene?
When we got under the covers, instead of showing ass and breast?
When it brought the family together?
When we had morals, instead of unrealistic acts?
When the actors were talented, instead of casted for their looks or family ties?
When it was all about the Ju Ju?
When it was all about Quality, instead of quantity?
When Tchidi Chikere only directed?
When the movies made us cry and laugh, instead of frustrated and ready to kill?

Who remembers the Old Nollywood?
With Aki and Paw Paw?
With the evil mother killing her grand babies?
When a man was willing to die for his one love?
When everything was possible with the lord?
When it was Patience Ozorkwo and Pete Edochie?
When it was Genevieve Nnaji and Ramsey Nouah?
When it was Osuofia?

Who remembers the Old Nollywood?
When everyone talked like a real Nigerian?
When our actresses were tattoo free?
When chewing gum was bad enough?
When cussing was only once in a blue moon?
When kissing on the cheek was the highest point?

I remember the Old Nollywood

When our visuals were bad, but acting was spectacular
When our actors knew what they were doing
When it was all about the plot
When we had real writers and not fake, hunger driven writers.
When it was more about entertainment than making money.
When everything was 100% naija.
When there was no white people in the movies (unless needed).
When movies were movies.

Who wants the New Nollywood?
with actors that try too hard?
a movie with Jim Iyke and 20 unknowns?
a movie with great visuals, but a bad story line and horrible acting?
with prolonged sex scenes?
with our stars ass and breast for the world to see?
with whites and copied story lines?
With fake accents?
And stupid, talentless, hunger ridden actresses?

  1. Who remembers the old nollywood?
I do. I actually watched some old school movies lately: Mortal Inheritance, Keeping Faith and Violated. Owo Blow, Saworoide, and Agogo Eewo.

When it was more about the story line?
Yes, it was. But some also had bad visuals. But the good story line made up for it. I remember almost everything was "Based on a True Life Story"

When it was in two parts, instead of prequels and sequels?
YES!! It was. I miss those days.

When we saw Pete Edochie only in one scene?
Man I miss Pete Edochie. His sons are now acting: Yul Edochie and Linc Edochie. I saw Linc last in 'Where Oceans Touch." He played Ini Edo's boss.

When we got under the covers, instead of showing ass and breast?
Honestly, that annoyed the dickens out of me. Yes, it was censorship and I guess it was to preserve something, but it just made the scene awkward as if it was something not to be done or talked about.

When it brought the family together?
Yeah, it did. But I remember my mother would not let me watch "The Prostitute" just because of the title. And it really was not a bad movie.

When we had morals, instead of unrealistic acts?
We did have morals didn't we? And the ending was not always so crystal clear and the bad guys were not carbon copy bad guys. The characters were dynamic.

When the actors were talented, instead of casted for their looks or family ties?
Oh my goodness, I miss the talent. Shall we talk of Pete Edochie, Chiwetalu Agu, Rachel Oniga, Bimbo Akintola, Keppy Ekpeyong-Bassey, Uche Osotule, Ronnie Diko, Norbert Young, Camilla Mberekpe, Gbenga Richards, Lanre Balogun, Jayke Aernan, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Rita Nzelu, Kenneth Okonkwo, Ngozi Ezeonu, Toun Oni, Wale Macauley.

When it was all about the Ju Ju?
I loved watching the scenes about Juju although the effects were bad...oh so bad. But back then, the acting made it scary.

When it was all about Quality, instead of quantity?
Yes. Yes it was. You had the likes of Amaka Igwe, Amata, Tunde Kelani, Tade Ogidan, and Ego Boyo directing.

    When Tchidi Chikere only directed?
    And NOT acted!!! lmao
When the movies made us cry and laugh, instead of frustrated and ready to kill?

  2. When the movies made us cry and laugh, instead of frustrated and ready to kill?
    Yep...yep.

    Who remembers the Old Nollywood?
    Me!!

    With Aki and Paw Paw?
The 90s...with Amaechi Muonagor as the father.

With the evil mother killing her grand babies?
Nope, I do not remember this one o.

When a man was willing to die for his one love?
Yeah like the Bruno Mars song, "Grenade." Those things were cheesy beyond cheesy. And the songs the directors stole and used as soundtracks. Or the musicians singing the entire plot.

When everything was possible with the lord?
The over-emphasis on prayer and god was annoying. It got to the point that the characters could not do things for themselves without going to one pastor or another. If you are going to include religion, at least have the characters be proactive in their lives as well.

When it was Patience Ozorkwo and Pete Edochie?
Patience Ozokwor. Please hire me as your fact-checker, I'll do it for free :) Or use MS Word or Chrome or Firefox. Yes, I remember those days.

When it was Genevieve Nnaji and Ramsey Nouah?
The directors overused these two so much, with the same story lines, that I cannot till today differentiate their movies. It is that bad.

    When it was Osuofia?
Nkem Owoh is hilarious. I preferred Ukwa and One Dollar to Osuofia though. For some reason, I have never seen Osuofia in one sitting, like "The Titanic."

    Who remembers the Old Nollywood?
    Me.

When everyone talked like a real Nigerian?
Yes. Nowadays people are picking up accents like trash. And most of the time it is trash. I saw one village movie with Omotola and Jim Iyke with American-Trinidad-Japanese accents. It was weird. But some people have their own Naija accents. Maybe it is where they lived but it is original: Ramsey, Eucharia, Nse Ikpe, Rita Dominic, Bimbo Akintola, to name a few.

When our actresses were tattoo free?
Abeg free Tonto Dike, although I find it distracting when she is acting. But I blame the costume department and the director for this. I remember when folks used to think, or maybe still do, that tattoos were of the devil. lol

When chewing gum was bad enough?
I think kids got slapped for that. But yes, that was enough to show that a character was "wayward." But, now we need cigarettes for that. I hate that. The actor should be able to portray "bad-ass ness" without a cigarette or gum.

When cussing was only once in a blue moon?
And it was in Naija fashion. This involved a parental figure and curses upon future generations or insults to past generations. Creativity at its best.

When kissing on the cheek was the highest point?
And it was done much better than that lip-touching they called kissing back in the day.

The Nollywood of today is not completely horrible. Cinematography is good and we are churning better directors. It is annoying that we, as the viewers, have to churn through 100 crap to get 1 gold. But with the way things are going, the industry is improving. We have newer faces in every facet: acting, directing, producing and new means of marketing products. We may have to contend with more shouting but we have more wise words.
